Friends and Neighbors, we have a job to do:
ELECT A MAYOR WHO GIVES ALBUQUERQUE THE BEST CHANCE TO PICK ITSELF UP AND MAKE IT THE GEM WE KNOW IT TO BE.
Albuquerque’s Future
It is in our hands, right now. The best thing all of us can do to move our immediate future, and that of our kids, in the right direction, is to vote in the upcoming run-off election, and to vote for Tim Keller.
We may feel powerlessness at the national political level, but that is not true at the local level. This is where we live, and this is where we can make a difference by creating positive change at a local level. Voters across the country are making a big difference at the ballot box in municipal elections. That can and will happen here in Albuquerque, if we all do our part.
What is at stake in this election? The quality of life in Albuquerque for all its inhabitants–those impacted by crime, those impacted by pollutants in their neighborhoods, those who want intelligent development of city infrastructure, those young working people who want to stay in the city they grew up in but cannot if they don’t find good jobs with good benefits, and good schools for their children. Keller’s comprehensive plans address all the key areas requiring attention for a city to flourish. Will he do what he says? His track record as city councilor, state legislator, and State Auditor says “yes,” that he will work to deliver. He is beholden to no special interest groups as a publicly financed candidate, and what you see is what you get. http://www.tk4abq.com/
We cannot be complacent about this election. Special interest money, like that from the Santolina developers, is paying for false advertising in a desperate campaign to undermine the popular support Keller has among voters. We need to work hard to ensure that Keller’s message gets to voters and that they turn out to vote in the run-off election. We all need to urge our family members, friends and neighbors to support Keller and vote.
If you have not yet had a chance to meet Tim Keller and would like to, please Email me and I will find out when there will be a speaking engagement, house party (these are NOT fundraisers, since he is publicly financed) or debate, and I will let you know.

UPCOMING EVENTS
The Bernalillo County Democrats Care project is up and running, with a great volunteer turnout in September for a workday at the Roadrunner Food Bank. Next on the agenda is a Thanksgiving meal for those families and individuals who cannot otherwise enjoy one. It is still in the planning stage. More details and a call for volunteers in the next newsletter. Community connection and outreach has long been a hallmark of the Democratic Party–it is good to see its return.
HELPING WITH DISASTER RELIEF
Americans and our neighbors have been hard hit by natural disasters in the past few months. New Mexico Democrats have been quick to respond and many of us still want to know how we can help. While the situation is dire in the Virgin Islands (pop. 100,000; electricity is to be restored next week), it is equally if not more desperate in Puerto Rico (pop. 3.7 million), where electricity might be restored some time in December. Here are some Public Broadcasting System recommended organizations doing relief work you can contribute to on-line. Direct Relief: https://www.directrelief.org/, which gets a 100% rating by Charity Navigator in all categories, with money raised going directly to relief work. You can specify where you want your donation to go, whether it be Puerto Rico, Hurricanes Maria, Irma, or Harvey relief, California wildfires or the earthquakes in Mexico. Americares: https://www.americares.org/ which gets a 97% rating on Charity Navigator. You cannot specify where you want your donation to go. The national Democratic Party has put together a list of organizations, some of which do not get such good marks on Charity Navigator: https://democrats.org/…/help-the-victims-of-natural-disaste…
Trees for Our Neighborhoods?
Our District 2 City Councilor, Ike Benton, has proposed a project for planting trees along streets in a neighborhood in our District. It involves submitting a plan and competing for the project to be located in your neighborhood. I know nothing about it, but here is the link. If anyone is interested in pursuing this, let me know and maybe some precinct members can get involved in what looks like an interesting green project. https://www.cabq.gov/…/di…/albuquerque-neighborwoods-project
THE MONTHS AHEAD
Although we are moving into that time of the year when most of us turn our attention to end of year chores, deadlines, time with family, friends, co-workers and neighbors, world and national news continue to pour in, will still be important, will still be demanding our attention, consideration, and action.
I will be planning on how to get you the information you want and need for the upcoming NM legislative session, and lining up meetings with our representatives. This will be a good time for you to send me an Email with your thoughts, with what you would like to see happening in the precinct and the information and action resources I can bring into this process.
If you would like to share photos that you think would be appropriate for the precinct newsletter, please send them to me and indicate how, or if, they should be attributed.
Together we make democracy vital, responsive, and secure.
