Nelly,

ICE is planning to deport a Connecticut mother of 2, one of whom has insulin dependent type I diabetes on Monday, November 20th at 3 pm.  Miriam Martinez-Lemus has lived in CT since 1992.  She’s married with 2 children- one of whom depends on her for constant medical monitoring and insulin injections.

Miriam cannot leave her daughter.  And she and her daughter need the experts at Yale’s Pediatric Endocrinology Department to survive.

So, instead of leaving her daughters, Miriam will turn herself in to ICE for incarceration at 8:00 a.m. so that other legal opportunities can be explored.  As you may know, this mother’s ICE incarceration will likely be out of state, meaning she will have no contact with her minor children, including her daughter who needs hourly monitoring for her juvenile diabetes.

We need to tell ICE ‘THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.”  And we need to tell Miriam and the girls that they are not invisible.  That we value them as people, as neighbors, as churchgoers, as humans.

Stop Blocking Young Women’s Access to Safe Abortions

From Nelly BlackerHanson, this ACLU call to action:

The Trump administration’s Office of Refugee Resettlement – and its anti-choice director, Scott Lloyd – is illegally and outrageously blocking a 17-year-old woman, “Jane Doe,” from obtaining an abortion she desires and has the right to acquire.

Make your voice heard – tell the federal government we want justice for Jane and all immigrant youth in government custody.

https://action.aclu.org/secure/no-forced-pregnancies

We took the government to court this week, and the judge agreed with us – quickly and decisively – and ordered the government to allow Jane to have her abortion. But then the Trump administration appealed. And now, a court has delayed Jane’s access to care even longer, pushing her even further into a pregnancy she decided to end weeks ago.

This fight is far from over. The only way we’re going to get Lloyd and the Trump administration to stop denying these young people their basic human rights is to expose their illegal actions.

Tell Scott Lloyd and the Office of Refugee Resettlement to stop breaking the law and stop denying immigrant women their constitutional right to safe abortion care.

It’s illegal to force a young woman to carry her pregnancy to term against her will. Period.

Not only did government officials block Jane from her healthcare appointments for a safe abortion, they forced her to go to a religiously-affiliated “crisis pregnancy center” where she received coercive counseling and an invasive, unnecessary ultrasound performed on her by non-medical staff against her will.

Jane Doe’s story is far from an isolated incident.

In another case, a young woman was forcibly sent to an emergency room after she’d taken an abortion pill to try to prevent her from completing her abortion. In yet another case, a senior U.S. government official was personally sent to visit a young woman who was seeking an abortion to attempt to talk her out of her decision.

And those are just some of the cases we know.

Government officials don’t have free reign to force their ideology and religious views onto undocumented youth. But this will only stop if we shine light on and stand up to illegal actions, in the courtroom and on the streets.

Tell Director Lloyd and the Office of Refugee Resettlement to stop illegally blocking safe abortion care for young immigrant women.

Thanks for seeking justice,

Friends and Neighbors, we have a job to do:
ELECT A MAYOR WHO GIVES ALBUQUERQUE THE BEST CHANCE TO PICK ITSELF UP AND MAKE IT THE GEM WE KNOW IT TO BE.

Albuquerque’s Future

It is in our hands, right now. The best thing all of us can do to move our immediate future, and that of our kids, in the right direction, is to vote in the upcoming run-off election, and to vote for Tim Keller.

We may feel powerlessness at the national political level, but that is not true at the local level. This is where we live, and this is where we can make a difference by creating positive change at a local level. Voters across the country are making a big difference at the ballot box in municipal elections. That can and will happen here in Albuquerque, if we all do our part.

What is at stake in this election? The quality of life in Albuquerque for all its inhabitants–those impacted by crime, those impacted by pollutants in their neighborhoods, those who want intelligent development of city infrastructure, those young working people who want to stay in the city they grew up in but cannot if they don’t find good jobs with good benefits, and good schools for their children. Keller’s comprehensive plans address all the key areas requiring attention for a city to flourish. Will he do what he says? His track record as city councilor, state legislator, and State Auditor says “yes,” that he will work to deliver. He is beholden to no special interest groups as a publicly financed candidate, and what you see is what you get. http://www.tk4abq.com/

We cannot be complacent about this election. Special interest money, like that from the Santolina developers, is paying for false advertising in a desperate campaign to undermine the popular support Keller has among voters. We need to work hard to ensure that Keller’s message gets to voters and that they turn out to vote in the run-off election. We all need to urge our family members, friends and neighbors to support Keller and vote.

If you have not yet had a chance to meet Tim Keller and would like to, please Email me and I will find out when there will be a speaking engagement, house party (these are NOT fundraisers, since he is publicly financed) or debate, and I will let you know.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The Bernalillo County Democrats Care project is up and running, with a great volunteer turnout in September for a workday at the Roadrunner Food Bank. Next on the agenda is a Thanksgiving meal for those families and individuals who cannot otherwise enjoy one. It is still in the planning stage. More details and a call for volunteers in the next newsletter. Community connection and outreach has long been a hallmark of the Democratic Party–it is good to see its return.

HELPING WITH DISASTER RELIEF

Americans and our neighbors have been hard hit by natural disasters in the past few months. New Mexico Democrats have been quick to respond and many of us still want to know how we can help. While the situation is dire in the Virgin Islands (pop. 100,000; electricity is to be restored next week), it is equally if not more desperate in Puerto Rico (pop. 3.7 million), where electricity might be restored some time in December. Here are some Public Broadcasting System recommended organizations doing relief work you can contribute to on-line. Direct Relief: https://www.directrelief.org/, which gets a 100% rating by Charity Navigator in all categories, with money raised going directly to relief work. You can specify where you want your donation to go, whether it be Puerto Rico, Hurricanes Maria, Irma, or Harvey relief, California wildfires or the earthquakes in Mexico. Americares: https://www.americares.org/ which gets a 97% rating on Charity Navigator. You cannot specify where you want your donation to go. The national Democratic Party has put together a list of organizations, some of which do not get such good marks on Charity Navigator: https://democrats.org/…/help-the-victims-of-natural-disaste…

Trees for Our Neighborhoods?

Our District 2 City Councilor, Ike Benton, has proposed a project for planting trees along streets in a neighborhood in our District. It involves submitting a plan and competing for the project to be located in your neighborhood. I know nothing about it, but here is the link. If anyone is interested in pursuing this, let me know and maybe some precinct members can get involved in what looks like an interesting green project. https://www.cabq.gov/…/di…/albuquerque-neighborwoods-project

THE MONTHS AHEAD

Although we are moving into that time of the year when most of us turn our attention to end of year chores, deadlines, time with family, friends, co-workers and neighbors, world and national news continue to pour in, will still be important, will still be demanding our attention, consideration, and action.

I will be planning on how to get you the information you want and need for the upcoming NM legislative session, and lining up meetings with our representatives. This will be a good time for you to send me an Email with your thoughts, with what you would like to see happening in the precinct and the information and action resources I can bring into this process.

If you would like to share photos that you think would be appropriate for the precinct newsletter, please send them to me and indicate how, or if, they should be attributed.

Together we make democracy vital, responsive, and secure.

Muslim Travel Ban Blocked

Good news!

Once again a federal judge (Judge Derrick K. Watson in Hawaii) has blocked Trump’s attempt to ban Muslims from entering the country.

Sad news: the locally owned Donut Mart has been vandalized repeatedly, with graffiti on both their building and their vehicle “Kill Them All”. Donut Mart is owned by the Gauba family, who are Muslim. They often donate to local community and social justice events. Please support them if you can.

Help Keller Win the Runoff

This from Jeff McConaughy

Here are a few ways to help Keller win the runoff:

1. Volunteer – Tim’s team needs canvassers, phone bankers, and more. Check www.tk4abq.com/volunteer for opportunities to help get out the vote one more time.

2. Donate – Keller qualified for public financing, so his campaign cannot accept cash donations, but Albuquerque Forward Together is a City of Albuquerque “Measure Finance Committee” (similar to a PAC) which is supporting Keller for Mayor. You can donate money to them to help pay for ads promoting Tim’s candidacy and/or defending him from spurious attacks like those we’ve already seen. Here’s their web site:https://www.abqforwardtogether.com/

3. Educate yourself on Tim’s “selling points” like public financing, excellent support for the International District as their two-term state senator, and an incredible job as state auditor, including tackling the rape kit backlog. Also, study up on his plans for combating crime and pushing economic development in the city. Use that knowledge to convince fence sitters or those who seem likely to sit out the runoff that Tim is the right choice. It would also be a good idea to have a solid response to anyone who brings up the false claims about Tim being lenient towards child sex offenders, just in case that comes up. Tim’s web site has lots of information on his policy proposals.

4. Recruit – if you know a Colon or Pedrotty voter, reach out. Make sure they’re not going to sit out the runoff because their preferred choice didn’t make it in. If everyone who voted for Colon and Pedrotty comes out for Keller, and he gets his base back to the polls, he’ll win by a comfortable margin, but fatigue and complacency are a factor.

Election day was a huge, important milestone, but it means diddly if we don’t win the runoff.

Jones Act: Seek Repeal

(From Mary Kinney) – Re Jones Act of 1920, which has been strangling shipments of aid to Puerto Rico. There is now only a 10-day waiver. The law goes back into effect after that,
increasing prices of everything shipped by at last a third of mainland prices. As an island everything is shipped.

Consider requesting members to contact Congress for permanent repeal: Senator McCain has been trying for that without success.

ACTION ITEM: Yet Another Effort to Repeal and Replace Obamacare

The ACA is under assault again this week.  http://www.childrensdefense.org/ — from Marie Lobo

BREAKING NEWS:  Susan Collins (R-Me) has issued a written statement saying that she can not support the most recent health “care” bill.  This almost certainly will kill the bill when combined with McCain’s, Ryan’s, and hopefully Murkowski’s ‘No’ votes.

ACTION ITEM: Attack Ads Aimed at Keller

This from Jeff McConaughy

This is a mass mailing from the chair of ABQ Forward Together, the pro-Keller PAC that’s working for his election as mayor. I hope we can all call these two goons and tell them off (with appropriate civility.) See bullet 1 under “What now?” It’s particularly troubling that some oil & gas dude from Hobbs feels fine with contributing to a smear campaign against a candidate in Albuquerque. These two perfectly embody one of the things wrong with our current political system. Rich people can afford to buy a “megaphone” for their opinions and use their wealth to smear people they disagree with.

Friday, September 22, 2017

Dear Friend,

As promised, we said we would send you the names and contact information of the donors behind “Make ABQ Safe” – the PAC attacking Tim Keller. The donors, for now, are two. They both represent big industry and neither are from Albuquerque.

Jeffrey Garrett, from Phoenix, is the asset manager for Santolina, the controversial sprawl development on Albuquerque’s Westside.

Mark Veteto, from Hobbs, represents oil and gas interests – and is a wealthy Republican donor.

This story has dominated today’s news – see the ABQ Journal article, “Santolina developer helped fund Keller attack ads” or the article by NM In Depth, “UPDATED: Santolina developer behind sex offender ads against Tim Keller,” and from NM Political Report, “Land developer and Hobbs oil executive behind ads against Keller.”

Even the Albuquerque Journal is calling this PAC discredited because the legislation that Tim supported in 2011 and again in 2013, was good public policy and is the reason why it is law today. In fact, this legislation passed with bipartisan, near unanimous support and was signed by the Governor. That’s right, in 2013, Tim fought for and passed the nation’s strongest sex offender laws to date. And as Auditor, Tim has fought for victims and for tackling the state’s rape kit backlog. It’s no surprise then, that last night the Albuquerque Police Officers Union formally endorsed Tim Keller for Mayor.

Here’s what we know: Big developers and right-wing oil and gas interests don’t want Tim Keller as Mayor. Who do they want? Jeff Garrett with Santolina said they prefer Brian Colón, Wayne Johnson or Dan Lewis. In their mind, they see no difference between the three, which is pretty telling.

What now?

1) Call Jeff Garrett at Garrett Development Corporation, 480-970-4005 (this is his business contact number, leave message); and then call Mark Veteto at Me-Tex Oil & Gas, 575-397-7750 and tell them they ought to be ashamed of themselves for what they’re doing to Tim and our community. Their ads attacking Tim are harmful to children and sexual assault survivors. Further, their distortion of Tim’s record has no place in our city and you are going to do everything you can to defeat their candidates.

2) Contribute to our PAC. As you know, we’re the independent group that can accept contributions to push back where Tim can’t. Your contributions help us get Tim’s message shared widely. In case you’ve missed it, see our TV ad here).

3) Ask your family and friends to vote for Tim Keller. The choice is clear. Tim Keller is the only candidate not beholden to special interests who can bring the change Albuquerque needs.

Thanks!
